Inudito
installation
year: 2022-23.
première: 23-24 Sept. 2023, MUSA (Musical Instruments Museum), Auditorium Parco della Musica, Roma (ITA).
program notes:
Inudito is an immersive sound installation that encourages the visitor to explore the multidimensional space of listening. Through audio diffusion using bone-conduction headphones and speakers, the acoustic space becomes more than just a parameter; it becomes architecture, the place that shapes and is shaped by the music. The visitor, free to move throughout the room, actively engages in the evolution of the sonic context, as his movements will shape the form and development, thanks to the positioning of specific sensors. Inudito thus is an adaptive sound installation that immerses sounds in space, explores space within sounds, and expands the dimension of listening both outside and inside the listener.
The installation is divided, from an auditory perspective, into three virtual areas, which are activated by various sensors. The first area features an ambiance characterized by pinpoint sounds, glitches, and sonic fragments. The speakers in this area are directed toward the visitor, creating an immersive and enveloping environment. The second area is characterized by a more expansive and tranquil soundscape, with the speakers in this zone directed toward the walls, stimulating the room's acoustic response and ensuring irregular acoustic diffusion throughout the entire space. The two described areas are virtually distinct, but they will create a unified sound scenario capable of immersing the listener in a context of total acoustic immersion. Each time the visitor crosses the sensor- covered zones, the system will play sound figures in the bone-conduction headphones. These brief sound figures will create an additional spatial layer, ensuring interactivity and adaptability of the installation. At the back of the room, a third area with seating is provided where the visitor can sit down to enjoy pure
listening. After a certain period during which the sensors do not detect any activity, the sound will shift to the bone-conduction headphones alone, effectively transitioning the perception from the external acoustic environment to the internal one.
